A lecture theatre is a far cry from the floor of a hairdressing salon, but Deakin University senior lecturer Dr Debra Bateman credits this beginning and a tumultuous life for helping her win not just one but two national teaching awards in one year.

2011 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year

SBS reporter Yaara Bou Melhem has been named the 2011 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year for Freedom's Call, her investigation into the people's democracy movement in Syria.

Bou Melhem spent a month solo in Syria researching and filming, beneath the radar of the secret police, who were monitoring mobile phones.

 
ACU teacher wins award
