The importance of responsible pet ownership was reinforced by Premier Colin Barnett today as he officially opened the RSPCA Million Paws Walk at Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth.

"The walk is the RSPCA's major annual fundraising and community event and the Liberal-National Government will contribute $10,000 to the RSPCA on this vital occasion," Mr Barnett said.

"This contribution comes on top of our decision last year to double the annual funding we provide to the RSPCA to $500,000 a year."

The Premier said the RSPCA played an important role in protecting and promoting the welfare of animals in Western Australia.

"The RSPCA is a highly respected animal welfare organisation and does excellent work across a range of activities including in education, re-homing pets and enforcing legislation," he said.

"The extra State Government funding will assist them to fund initiatives like the promotion of responsible pet ownership and conduct additional inspections and enforcement activities associated with companion animals and non-commercial livestock."
